Social Skills Groups for Kids & Teens

Dynamic Social Skills Group Programs

At the Social Learning Studio, we offer social skills group programs based on the Dynamic Social Skills Group Model developed by Connie Buckingham, Psychologist.  These groups have been running since 2004 with evidence validating this approach.

The Dynamic Social Skills Group Program Model was developed by Connie Buckingham, informed by her PhD research in this area. Social skills are taught explicitly as social difficulties occur for participant's in the group.  Importantly, the group program isn't just about skills, it's about skills in context.  Participants engage in interesting and fun group challenges and experiences that provide engaging opportunities to practice new skills.

Junior Boys Group

"Comic Maker"

Over 5 weeks participants will work in small groups of three to create comic books to keep.  Participants will work on their skills in communication, planning, compromise and collaboration to create interesting, funny comics to take home.

Junior Girls Group

"Build a Story Book"

Participants will work as a small team of 3 to brainstorm a brand new story idea, develop characters, and plot out an interesting story that will be illustrated into a beautiful book for each participant to keep. Social skills to help the team work together will be explored each week.

Advanced Girls Group

"Tackling Social Anxiety"

This group program will focus on the feelings and thoughts that can stop us from speaking up, stepping forward, or taking a chance.
Strategies to help manage anxious feelings will be explored each week with shared experiences discussed.

Advanced Boys Group

"The Thinker Vortex - Group Challenge"

The Thinkers Vortex is a prototype model that Connie has developed to help structure thoughts and ideas, and improve communication with others.  To practice using this model, participants will be presented with a different group challenge each week, using the Thinkers Vortex to plan their ideas and work together as a group.  This is a Zoom Based program.

Teen Groups

"The What's What of Socialising at School"

This is a participant led discussion group.  Social themes most pertinent to the group members will be aired and unpacked each week, supported by the group facilitator, Psychologist Cameron Batman.  Social questions will be tackled with evidence from science and research, helping to bridge the gap between assumption, expectation and reality.
